While it was originally discovered quite by accident, these famous experiments led to the discovery of classical conditioning. This discovery had a major impact on our understanding of how learning takes place as well as the development of the school of behavioral psychology. Pavlovs Dog: A Background How did experiments on the digestive response in dogs lead to one of the most important discoveries in psychology? Ivan Pavlov was a noted Russian physiologist who went on to win the 1904 Nobel Prize for his work studying digestive processes. It was while studying digestion in dogs that Pavlov noted an interesting occurrence: His canine subjects would begin to salivate whenever an assistant entered the room. The concept of classical conditioning is studied by every entry-level psychology student, so it may be surprising to learn that the man who first noted this phenomenon was not a psychologist at all. In his digestive research, Pavlov and his assistants would introduce a variety of edible and non-edible items and measure the saliva production that the items produced. Salivation, he noted, is a reflexive process. It occurs automatically in response to a specific stimulus and is not under conscious control. However, Pavlov noted that the dogs would often begin salivating in the absence of food and smell. He quickly realized that this salivary response was not due to an automatic, physiological process. The Development of Classical Conditioning Theory Based on his observations, Pavlov suggested that the salivation was a learned response. The dogs were responding to the sight of the research assistants white lab coats, which the animals had come to associate with the presentation of food. Unlike the salivary response to the presentation of food, which is an unconditioned reflex, salivating to the expectation of food is a conditioned reflex. Pavlov then focused on investigating exactly how these conditioned responses are learned or acquired. In a series of experiments, Pavlov set out to provoke a conditioned response to a previously neutral stimulus. He opted to use food as the unconditioned stimulus, or the stimulus that evokes a response naturally and automatically. The sound of a metronome was chosen to be the neutral stimulus. The dogs would first be exposed to the sound of the ticking metronome, and then the food was immediately presented. After several conditioning trials, Pavlov noted that the dogs began to salivate after hearing the metronome. A stimulus which was neutral in and of itself had been superimposed upon the action of the inborn alimentary reflex, Pavlov wrote of the results. We observed that, after several repetitions of the combined stimulation, the sounds of the metronome had acquired the property of stimulating salivary secretion. In other words, the previously neutral stimulus (the metronome) had become what is known as a conditioned stimulus that then provoked a conditioned response (salivation). The Impact of Pavlovs Research Pavlovs discovery of classical conditioning remains one of the most important in psychologys history. In addition to forming the basis of what would become behavioral psychology, the classical conditioning process remains important today for numerous applications, including behavioral modification and mental health treatment, including treating phobias, anxiety and panic disorders. Pavlov’s work has also inspired research on how to apply classical conditioning principles to taste aversions. The principles have been used to prevent coyotes from preying on domestic livestock and to use neutral stimulus (eating some type of food) paired with an unconditioned response (negative results after eating the food) to create an aversion to a particular food.?? Unlike other forms of classical conditioning, this type of conditioning does not require multiple pairings in order for an association to form. In fact, taste aversions generally occur after just a single pairing. Ranchers have found ways to put this form of classical conditioning to good use to protect their herds. In one example, mutton was injected with a drug that produces severe nausea. After eating the poisoned meat, coyotes then avoided sheep herds rather than attack them. While Pavlovs discovery of classical conditioning formed an essential part of psychologys history, his work continues to inspire further research today. His contributions to psychology have helped make the discipline what it is today and will likely continue to shape our understanding of human behavior for years to come.

1) Make a *public* prior deadline: The night before every exam or paper deadline is always the same for me: Me: Why did I spend the last two weeks working on the opening sentence?! Roommate: Didn’t you also watch the entire first season of Game of Thrones Me: For inspiration!!! Roommate: ~raises eyebrows~ On rodent neurogenesis? Me: It’s ok—I have the rest of the night to work on this. I’m sure I can write seven pages by 9 am. If I spend one hour per page†¦plus time for minor edits†¦and I guess I should allot time to shower before class†¦ Me: ~spends the next ten minutes working on unnecessary calculations~ Roommate: Just start writing!! Me: Oh wait I got an email from the TA; I should probably check that first. Me: !!! The universe heard me—we get an extension of two whole days!!! Roommate: Great—the paper might actually be decent if you start working on it now. Me: I should probably update Facebook first, in case the rest of the class didn’t see the email. Plus, I’ll be way more productive in the morning†¦ This problem is not mine alone: one meta-analysis found that between 80 and 95 percent of college students procrastinate1. (The same researchers found that the other 5-20% of them might be robots.) Procrastinating is habitual, it’s stressful, and it results in suboptimal work—but is it preventable? Here are five verified ways to reduce procrastination while studying or paper writing. 1) Make a *public* prior deadline: If your exam is on Friday, agree to send a classmate your study notes by Monday or schedule a group study session on Tuesday. If a paper is due on the 30th of the month, tell your TA you’ll send him a draft by the 14th. Social expectation is a great motivator, so you’ll feel pressured to not miss these deadlines. (This isn’t the case for personal deadlines written in our private calendars because we have no problem breaking promises to ourselves.) Even if you do end up delaying the draft or study session by a day or two, these public deadlines will guarantee that you’ve at least started writing or studying before the official deadline’s eve. 2) Log the number of hours it *actually* takes to complete an assignment: Humans consistently underestimate the time it will take to complete a lengthy task. This tendency is called the planning fallacyand results because we are overly optimistic about our own future actions and abilities. When students were asked how long it would take to finish their senior theses, the average estimate was over three weeks shorter than the average actual completion time! The next time you sit down to write a paper or study for an exam, use your smart phone to record start and stop times for every session—even if some of those sessions consist entirely of staring at a blank computer screen. This exercise will help you prepare more realistic schedules in the future because you’ll have written evidence that a weekend really isn’t enough time to finish that ten-page paper. 3) Set many small goals: Divide a large task into multiple smaller tasks, and make them as specific as possible. Let’s compare the following lists: The first attempted to break down the task of writing a complete paper, but the â€Å"sub-goal† is still too large, too vague, and ultimately overwhelming. The second list, on the other hand, lays out exactly what to do in succinct steps. These sub-goals are smaller, more specific, and therefore more manageable. 4) Reward yourself for accomplishing sub goals: After every bout of procrastination I promised to never procrastinate again. But this never worked because I was repeatedly rewarded for procrastinating: Every time I stayed up all night putting together a sub-optimal assignment and submitting it in the brink of time, the lesson â€Å"procrastinating works† was reinforced. Rewarding yourself for completing sub goals in a timely fashion attempts to reverse that lesson. After titling all sections, check Facebook for five minutes (and don’t forget to set a timer!). After finishing the introduction, go get coffee. In addition to being rewarded for productivity, you’re also incentivized to be efficient because you have something to look forward to. The smart phone app Procrasterwas built with this in mind – it allows users to divide a task into short time intervals and provides a reward at the end of each interval. 5) Work in a distraction-free space: Working in my dorm room was procrastinator heaven – it allowed me to take naps and meander through the Internet without fear of judgment by my peers. For others, working in a crowded coffee shop was procrastinator heaven because it allowed them to be distracted by any and everyone who passed through. Most campuses have designated â€Å"quiet study spaces†, which I highly recommend. External distractions will be minimized because it’s quiet, and internal distractions will be minimized because other students are present (and can see what you are up to). There is no magic formula to reduceprocrastination. As with most things, you’ll get better as you continue to make a conscious effort to improve. Racialism Appiah addresses the issues of racialism, intrinsic racism, and extrensic racism in his article entitled RACISMS. However, after analyzing Appiah's views on racism and its different forms, his views on the theoretical validity of racialism and extrinsic racism are seriously doubted. Appiah defines racialism as "the view that there are essentail characteristics that allow us to classify people into distinct races, each of which shares certain traits and tendencies". On this topic, Appiah thinks that this theory, or way of categorizing people is false. He thinks that it is merely an excuse for people to practice types of racism. Among the two most distinct types of racism are intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic racism consists of people who differentiate morally between members of different races because they "believe that each race has a different moral status, quite independent of the moral characteristics entailed by its racial essence." For the intrinsic racist there is no moral, intellectual, cultural, or perhaps even physical trait or act in relevancy to a member of another race that would merit equal treament. Extrinsic racists make moral distinctions between members of other races because they believe that the racial essence entails certain morally relevant qualities. The extrinsic racist's discrimintation stems from the belief that different races are different genetically, and these genetic differences constitute different treatment and expectations. Even with evidence that states otherwise, evidence that points that a person of another race is intelligent, or noble, there is nothing that can deter the extrinsic racist's perceptions about those of another race. But, the extrinsic racist may in fact have friends or loved ones in that race.It is this belief that leads Appiah to believe that these individuals have a "cognitive incapacity", or an inability to reason. Appiah comments early on that racialism is a false concept, or view. His grounds for his claim is that it serves as a presupposition to two types of racism, extrinsic and intrinsic. However, he is only keeping in consideration a few results and purposes of racialism. When Appiah looks at racialism, he sees that it is a science that allows us to classify people into distinct races based on character traits and tendencies. In his perspective, this serves no further purpose but to validate racism, and that it is a concept that is false in theory. The truth of the matter is there are certain obvious differences based on race. Most apparent is skin color, and other physical characteristics like hair, eyes, lips, etc. That fact alone weakens Appiah's argument racialism is false. This weakens Appiah's argument because when he says that racialism is false in theory, part of what he saying that either there are no traits that allow us to classify people into races. Certain physical characteristics are evident in races and allows us to classify by race. The second part of Appiah's argument regarding racialism is that racialism also classifies on character tendencies originating from race. It is generally agreed that race had no create character tendencies, morals, and actions. However, race can indirectly play a role in the development of many characteristics. Race is becoming less of a factor as more and more people engage in racial mixed relationships. But it is a factor. Certain races are more inclined to be a part of certain cultures, with their own respective value systems. For instance, being born Chinese does not automatically make you good at kung-fu, give you more of a natural ability to draw, or a more respectable person. However, due to the history of the chinese, and the culture behind it their are certain traits that a chinese individual would be more likely to take on. Chinese may be more likey to draw well because of calligraphy, in which every word is basically a little picture. this obviously would help to develop control over the pen. The culture of the chinese has a very heavy influence on respecting one's parents and the elderly, which would undoubtably make older individuals seem more honorable or wise. So in that case, race does indeed have an impact on character tendencies and behavior. It shows that race can have a connection to culture and upbringing, which does relate to the type of person that will develop. This is where Appiah's theory that racialism is a presupposition to to racism comes into play. These cultural characteristics can easily be mistaken for racial characteristics. Also, none of these traits are absolute, or definate. Culture does not have the power to dictate a person's morality, behavior, and abilities, but it can influence these things.
